...World no 1 and was awarded with a gold trophy and cheque. His magnificent awarding ceremony was organized at the Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Chennai. The occasion saw the presence of some of the high profile personalities from India and abroad.
Magnus Carlsen received his award from FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms J Jayalalithaa. The Chief Minister also presented symbolic cheques for Rs.9.90 Crores to Magnus Carlsen and Rs.6.03 Crores to Viswanathan Anand at the prize giving ceremony of the FIDE World Chess Championship. In addition to that she handed over the crown made from olive leaves in the Nilgris Mountains in Tamil Nadu to the FIDE President who in turn did the crowning of World No. 1 chess player.
The venue of the crowning ceremony was the same hall in which the ten games were played between previous World champion Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen. Over 500 people attended the ceremony. Carlsen became the 20th player ever in the history of world chess since 1886 to be crowned champion.
This world chess championship between two top seeded chess players was an ultimate event and it ran from November 7-25 at Chennai. It was organized in a spectacular manner by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association.
Sven Magnus Carlsen born on November 30, 1990 is a Norwegian chess grandmaster. His peak rating is 2872 which is the highest in history. This chess prodigy was announced the grandmaster at the age of 13 years and the second youngest grandmaster in history. Carlsen also reached an Elo rating of 2861 and finally beated Viswanathan Anand in the World Chess Championship 2013 to become the new world chess champion. Carlsen is known for his strategy and attacking style. His focus on the game is awe- inspiring and he plays a variety of openings.
