Zenobia winner in 4th Pakistan National Women Chess Championship 2014

The 4th National Women Chess Championship was won by the defending National Women Champion Zenobia Wasif of Karachi. The championship was held at Faisal Town, Lahore from 28-30 March 2014.

Zenobia Wasif played two games, in one she beat Fatima Shabbir in a quite credible manner but in the other which she played against Maryam Nasir of Punjab, Wasif had to hesitate and throw away two pawns with no compensation. However, the game took a new turn and became exciting when Nasir lost control over the game and blundered. Zenobia was very fast to grab the full point and finally the crown became hers.

 

Zenobia finished her campaign with 6 wins and a draw against her arch-rival Ghazala Shabbir. Urooj Saeed of Lahore was runner up with 6, Ghazala earned 3rd position with 5.5. On the other hand, Maryam Nasir and Nameeqa Aslam scored 5 points each and got fourth and fifth positions respectively. The 7 round Swiss league championship was held from 28-30 March 2014 at Lahore. The championship saw 24 selected woman players participating in the championship. 

 

To add to the pride, these top five players of the 4th National Women Chess Championship have also earned the right to represent the Pakistan women Chess team in 41st World Chess Olympiads being held at Tromso, Norway in August 2014. The Chess Federation of Pakistan has scheduled an extensive training program for the selected players. In addition to that a veteran Olympian of Malta Chess Olympiads 1980 has been engaged in the training program on full time basis.

 

The 4th National Women Chess Championship is a prestigious event that has been providing many promising women chess players platform to showcase their talent.

Male counterparts of the 29th National Chess Championship is scheduled to take place from 25th April to 30th April at Faletti,s Hotel, Lahore.
