The French Defence is one of the oldest and reliable systems against White's first move 1.e4. Bkack's idea is to challenge and hopefully to exchange the e4 pawn for d5.

Transpositions

interesting to know that we can transpose to the French Defence by Queen's Gambit after 1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5 or the declining of a Blackmar–Diemer Gambit after 1.d4 d5 2.e4 e6.
